Geraldine was a violin maker when she first decided to set up her business, Tidy Books, in 2004 with £500 from her violin workshop. Tidy Books designs, manufactures and distributes innovative, eco-friendly and stylish storage for children that promotes their sense of independence and love of books. The products are manufactured in China using FSC wood and all the products are finished with a non-toxic water lacquer which is better for the producers and the environment. Tidy Books products are now sold in retailers such as John Lewis and internationally.

In Geraldine’s words…

Why I started my business

I started Tidy books because I couldn’t find a suitable bookcase for my daughter. One that would be easy for her to see and pick her books independently. I found that none of the bookcases for kid’s bedrooms on the market were adapted for children to use themselves - and didn’t appear to be designed with children in mind. All my designs fill a gap in the market and must tick 3 boxes: be an original that solves a problem; look stylish and be practical for kids to use.

My proudest achievements in business

  • My original bookcase is considered an iconic classic design and has featured on TV within Cbeebies and Homeland programmes.

  • We have achieved significant coverage in the press and are about to be featured in HOUZZ 2018  https://houzzof2018.com/

  • Starting a business with no experience or funding and just going for it!  Being ambitious whilst staying true to my values.

  • Expanding into an international business.

  • Becoming more environmentally friendly - we changed to water lacquer for the finish of our products - even though it has been difficult as more coats are needed. It also takes longer to dry, but is better for the environment than acrylic lacquers which evaporate fumes.

  • My products are considered market leaders by interior designers.
